When we think of Bob Dylan, we often reflect on his profound impact on music, culture, and politics. Over the decades, he’s transcended the role of a mere musician, becoming a cultural icon whose voice and influence have defined multiple generations. In recent years, Dylan has also ventured into passion projects like his art and his whiskey company, Heaven’s Door, which displays his art on uniquely crafted bottles. With all this in mind, when a biopic was announced featuring Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird) as Dylan, many were skeptical. Dylan’s legacy is so distinct that the casting choice left even the most loyal of fans scratching their heads. However, Chalamet’s performance has proven to be nothing short of mesmerizing, silencing his critics and showcasing an impressive depth that will leave audiences entranced.

The film, A Complete Unknown, begins with a young Bob Dylan in his 20s walking outside a hospital, eager to meet his musical hero, Woody Guthrie. Played by Scoot McNairy (known for True Detective Season 3 and Speak No Evil), Guthrie’s portrayal is heartbreaking. In way where he uses his facial expressions to show his range of emotions, as well as his body language makes up for the fact he can no longer speak. His brief but impactful screen time captures why Guthrie left a lasting impression on Dylan. McNairy’s performance is subtle yet powerful, emphasizing the gravitas of Guthrie’s influence on Dylan, setting the tone for the rest of the film. The movie’s portrayal of Guthrie’s legacy is poignant, establishing a clear emotional link that propels Dylan’s evolution as both a person and artist.
In addition to McNairy, the film also features Edward Norton (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), who brings Pete Seeger to life in a captivating and nuanced performance. Norton’s portrayal of Seeger is a masterclass in restraint, showcasing the folk legend’s quiet strength and commitment to social justice. His approach is zen-like and, while his screen time is limited, Norton makes every moment count, earning an Academy Award nomination for his performance. His subtlety elevates the overall narrative, reminding viewers that greatness often resides in the quietest of gestures. However, the film itself skims over Seeger’s importance to his causes as well seemingly as a crash course into his career.
One of the most interesting elements of A Complete Unknown is the exploration of Bob Dylan’s early years, particularly the relationships with the women who profoundly impacted his life. Joan Baez, portrayed by Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick), stands out in this regard. Barbaro’s performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and it’s easy to see why. She masterfully navigates the complexities of Baez’s relationship with Dylan, showcasing the emotional highs and lows, as well as the inherent tension that came with their shared music and personal lives. Barbaro’s versatility is on full display, capturing the depth of Baez’s character while making her an integral part of Dylan’s story.
Equally important is the dynamic between Dylan and Sylvie Russo (based on Dylan’s muse/lover Suze Rotolo), a woman who stands by him through thick and thin. The film delves into the complexities of their relationship, showing how Russo’s unwavering support becomes a foundation in Dylan’s tumultuous life. This subplot is handled delicately while the film balances the love triangle that Dylan faces throughout the narrative, capturing the conflicting natures of Dylan trying to be a people pleaser as well as making his own decision in what kind of songs he wants to write for himself and the impact those choices will have on his audience.
The true standouts of A Complete Unknown, however, are its sound design and music mixing. The film excels in bringing the music to life, ensuring that every song — whether performed by Joan Baez, Dylan, or a surprise cameo by Boyd Holbrook (Logan; Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) as Johnny Cash — feels authentic and impactful. Holbrook’s portrayal of Cash is a pleasant surprise as he nails Cash’s legendary voice and mannerisms. This attention to sound elevates the film, making it more than just a biopic but a sensory experience that resonates long after the credits roll.
