Open Dialogue with “Them” cinematographer Checco Varese.

Checco Varese has worked in nearly every aspect of cinematography. He’s been a news photo journalist; he’s shot major music videos, he’s worked for NatGeo; he’s worked on indie and feature films (It: Chapter 2, The 33, Pacific Rim) and episodic TV (and streaming).

Today he rejoins Noel T. Manning II on Open Dialogue to talk about shooting in a pandemic, the Amazon Original anthology series Them, the forthcoming Michael Keaton/Hulu Project Dopesick and the power of cinema (no matter the format) to speak truth and ask questions.

The first episode of Them premiered Friday, April 9th on Amazon Prime Video.

*Footage is used by permission for review, evaluation and educational purposes. Manning is a long-time member of several registered critics’ organizations.

Noel T. Manning is a member of the CCA, SEFCA and the NCFCA and is also the host of the television program and radio show Meet Me at the Movies. He’s the founder of the Real to Reel Film Fest and is an adjunct professor of film studies. When he’s not embracing mainstream, indie, international, documentary or art films, he’s digging into the world of cinema by chatting with principle individuals involved in various aspects of the filmmaking industry.
