1996’s “Eraser” explodes with vibrant visuals and sounds in 4K UHD.

The year is 1996, Chuck Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors; The Blob; The Mask) has a new movie coming out with Arnold Schwarzenegger (Batman & Robin) and James Caan (Thief); it looks campy, fun, and packed with ridiculous action. Audiences are used to Schwarzenegger being in his post-Terminator era, knowing he could do fun and camp and still deliver action as Junior (1994); True Lies (1994); Last Action Hero (1993); and Kindergarten Cop (1990) all came out before this release. The film, a cross between Last Action Hero and True Lies on a smaller-ish scale, is an over-the-top tale about terrorism and fighting the right fight, includes ridiculous dialogue and insane action sequences, and is as enjoyable as it is silly. So, sit back and prepare for Eraser in 4K UHD from Warner Brothers.

The movie focuses on John “Eraser” Kruger (Schwarzenegger) as his job is to help witness protection people who have been discovered disappear, whether their discovery is due to the people who are after them being good at finding them or other people being careless. John will help you once, you get to be erased once, and, after that, you’re on your own. He’s given a new assignment to protect Lee (Vanessa Williams) who’s a weapons contractor whistleblower about to expose a ring of people, which includes a variety of high-ranking officials, who want to release a high-power railgun that can shoot through walls out to the world. While it’s never revealed too early, it’s apparent who the villains are, but this never ruins the fun of the twists and turns throughout the movie. While John was trained by DeGuerin (James Caan) and works for Donahue (James Cromwell), they’re heavily interested in Lee and her whereabouts, which leads John to play this mission a little closer to the chest.

In terms of presentation, Eraser’s only other release appears to be a 2008 Blu-ray and that is the only “high def” version we’ve had before the 30th anniversary 4K release. The 4K has HDR10, Dolby Vision, and appears to be a native 4K scan and not an upscale, evidenced in the release itself. This presentation is flawless; it is clean, crisp, vibrant, and looks like a modern-day movie. There is nothing in this transfer that makes this look 30 years old. It looks as good as ever with its vibrant darkness which engulfs scenes, and lively explosions in Arnold’s wake of chaos. It is just a beautiful disk to watch in this new restoration. The audio on Eraser is just as immaculate with a new Dolby Atmos remix which boasts Alan Silverstri’s (Avengers: Endgame) score, making the action set pieces truly engrossing and captivating. The original audio mix is also included, ensuring there are options. This is truly a spectacular disk that only gets better with each aspect.

The 4K restoration has two brand-new featurettes included with this edition. Both feature talks with Chuck Russell (The Mask), executive producer Michael Tadross (Ocean’s 8), and actor Vanessa Williams (Shaft), all of whom recorded individually. The first one is titled “Reinventing the Modern Action Hero — The Evolution of Arnold,” is them talking about Arnold, what he brought to the movie, and how Eraser shaped his career. Weird to not have Arnold here but, alas, it is also a relatively short feature. The second features is “‘90s Action Thriller Reimagined,” in which they talk about the film’s inception, stunts, and impact. If they were much longer and went further in-depth, the features would’ve been more engaging.

Overall, with the incredibly well thought of and cared for restoration boasting a beautiful transfer, this release is a must-buy for anyone who’s a fan of Russell’s Arnold-blasting insanity that has to be seen to be believed. Considering this is the first release to ever boast special features, it will also please those who want more than just the movie on the disk, even if they’re minimal in execution. Lastly, it is presented in two different versions: a slip cover edition with an amray and a steelbook edition, which lacks some ingenuity in the artwork. Overall, Eraser’s new presentation is certainly not going to be erased from memory as this is the best the movie has looked in years, if not ever.
