Believe it or not, the use of 3D in cinema is not a modern marketing ploy. Before it was pushed in theaters to the point of influencing the television market, there were titles released using anaglyph 3D, such as the 1978 Lo Wei-directed Jackie Chan-starring actioner Magnificent Bodyguards. After an extensive restoration process, 88 Films is releasing Magnificent Bodyguards in standard 2D, anaglyph 3D, *and* Real-D 3D for home viewing. Official Synopsis:

Magnificent Bodyguards (1978) marks a milestone in Hong Kong action cinema as the very first martial arts film shot in 3D. Jackie Chan stars in this high-energy adventure directed by Wei Lo, the filmmaker behind Bruce Lee’s legendary The Big Boss and Fist of Fury. Chan plays a fearless fighter who joins a team of guards tasked with escorting a mysterious, ailing man through the perilous terrain of Stormy Hills—a land of constant danger, betrayal, and hidden secrets. As the journey unfolds, loyalties are tested, fights erupt with dazzling choreography, and the truth about the man they’re protecting begins to surface.

Famed for its blend of 3D spectacle and traditional kung fu theatrics, the film is also remembered for its rousing score, which borrows liberally from a galaxy far, far away. Presented for the first time on disc in its original 3D format, Magnificent Bodyguards offers fans a chance to experience the outrageous fun as it was originally intended, complete with flying fists, weapons, and punches leaping straight from the screen.

This 3-disc Blu-ray set from 88 Films includes Real-D 3D, anaglyph 3D, and standard 2D viewing options. Newly remastered in a 2K restoration from the original negatives, it features a high-definition 1080p transfer in 2.39:1 aspect ratio, original Cantonese dual mono audio with English subtitles, and the classic English dub.
