If you fell in love with the 2016 tv show Westworld and never saw the original movie that the show is based on, you’re definitely in for a wild wild west journey. Westworld (1973) is a mixed bag that mostly whets the appetite and, at the very least, encourages fans to revisit, or visit for the first time, the terrific series. Written and directed by Crichton, the outer worldly science fiction tale of Westworld is visually spectacular in this 4K UHD release by Arrow.

The movie focuses on the fictional world of Westworld, where the rich and powerful can go off and venture into a world of sleaze and chaos with virtually no consequence. It’s a reality where the other inhabitants (other than visitors) are all artificial, created for Westworld, so, if you want to shoot someone, feel free; want to explore prostitution without endangerment? Be our guest. Anything you can imagine is at your fingertips in Westworld — someone’s definition of ideal reality, while simultaneously someone else’s personal hell. However, as we learn from all futuristic tales, when something is too good to be true, and technology is at the helm, whatever can go wrong, most likely will go wrong. In part, the movie focuses on Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin) and John Blane (James Brolin) who want to take in the new offerings of Westworld. While Peter is more nervous and John is more relaxed, it is Peter who decides to test the limits and shoots one of the robots, enticing his thrills and getting him more in the mood to explore the offerings of Westworld. However, it is not just some random Westworld robot that Peter attacked, he attacked The Gunslinger (Yul Brynner), and something turns in The Gunslinger, making him want to wreak havoc, turning Westworld from a futuristic escape of intrigue to one of sheer horror and terror.
This 4K transfer by Arrow features Dolby Vision and an HDR10 compatible presentation with the original restored lossless four-channel stereo sound as well as a 2.0, a 1.0, and a remixed 5.1 DTS HD MA surround option but it is the picture that truly looks remarkable. Restored from the original negative, there is no reason for the film to be anything other than sublime, but how clean and crisp this looks is truly remarkable. Considering the time of the movie’s release, this feels like watching a brand-new, freshly struck 35 mm presentation of it, the closest to replicating that first ever viewing experience on opening day. It truly is a testament to the work Arrow Video does, and this transfer is so exceptional that it truly needs to be seen to be believed.

Aside from the gorgeous and remarkable transfer, aside from featuring archival features (two, be exact), there are a slew of new features from commentaries to scholarly conversations to interviews that round out this exceptional limited edition with a collector’s booklet, art cards, and new artworks. Truly, Arrow never misses on their transfers or their bonuses, and Crichton’s Westworld is not an exception. The new features that are most interesting are “Cowboy Dreams,” a new conversation between Richard Benjamin (Catch-22) and producer/screenwriter Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood); “At Home on the Range,” an interview with James Brolin (Pee-wee’s Big Adventure); and “Sex, Death and Androids,” a new appreciation of the film by author and film scholar Alexandra Heller-Nicholas. These three features offer a lot of new insight and tidbits, as well as an outsider’s appreciation for the movie that helped shaped a genre. One of Crichton’s early ventures into writing and directing features himself, one which spawned one of the best television shows of the 21st century, comes home in glorious 4K UHD for fans new and old to rejoice with.
