One of the funniest movies of 2025 is now available on home video with a beautiful collector’s edition from A24. Similarly to A24’s other editions (as of late) this beautiful digibook for Andrew DeYoung’s Friendship comes jam packed with some extras, both physical and digital, and features on the release of the film itself. What is great about this edition is that, in the U.S., this is the only way to get the Blu-ray (no 4K is currently available), so the library-style packaging of the digibook with the UPC on the spine matches uniformly with the latest and upcoming slates of their releases. Whether this is a conscious choice to abandon the larger book-sized releases and stick to these smaller compact editions or not, it is much appreciated that the shelf uniformity continues.

While we could deep dive into Friendship and the absolutely insane world that Tim Robinson (An American Pickle) and Paul Rudd (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), along with Andrew DeYoung (Would It Kill You to Laugh? Starring Kate Berlant + John Early), create here, to openly spoil the movie would be a disservice of the movie (there will be some spoilers within this review). I reviewed the movie originally after seeing it at TIFF 2024 (spoiler-free), and, without wanting to spoil much about the movie, the gut-wrenching hilarity that exists in this masterful world is one that has to be seen, over and over again. I can confirm as of this writing that I’ve seen the movie four to five times.

Looking at this disk as a home release, it is 1080p with English and Spanish subtitles, there is no mention of Dolby Atmos so it is presumably not something that is included. Now, getting down to some of the nitty gritty of the release, speculation and confirmation from independent sources say that some cases came with the wrong disk and included the printed Canadian VVS (distributor) art on the disk itself, but, as of this writing, it is unconfirmed whether this has since been resolved and whether this issue was only pertaining to orders made from and/or shipped to Canada or if the issues has a wider reach. However, there is no difference in terms of what is on the actual disk in the mix-up orders; the A24 special features and presentation are there, just not the correct art work. The difference in the artwork on the disk is supposed to be the toad (spoilers incoming) which is from one of the funniest scenes in the entire movie. The magical toad that sends Craig (Tim Robinson) on an acid trip to Subway, where he sees Austin (Paul Rudd) make his sandwich, only to wake up and not be able to eat the sandwich in his trip is one of the heaviest and heartiest laughs achieved in a movie released officially up to this point. Such an insane concept to have a terrible trip that is centred and focused on going to Subway, and only to order a black forest ham sandwich to wake up and realize that was the trip. That is the only difference between the corrected and incorrect disks though, so if you’re a stickler or just want what you’re supposed to get and you do not get the toad disk, reach out to shop@a24films.com with the wrong disk you received and your proof of purchase and they’ll ensure the right disk gets sent out to you.

In terms of special features, there’re the standard inclusions here which are a director’s commentary and deleted scenes. The YouTube short released in conjunction with the movie, the “men talking in the dark” Q&A which was a night vision Q&A with Eric Rahill (Rap World), Paul Rudd, Tim Robinson, and Andrew DeYoung, is included and extended. But the greatest feature, which had to be watched multiple times to simply catch my breath, is the extended Conner O’Malley garage scene. This runs approximately 12 minutes and is so much more ridiculous than what we get fully in the film, creating something more chaotic and insane than anything deemed possible with just the movie as a whole. Overall, the director’s commentary, extended night vision Q&A, and the extended garage scene are more than worth the more-than-standard Blu-ray cost, making this A24 edition a must-have for any fan of Tim Robinson and cringe comedies.
