Arrow Video brings all the blood and gore of “Jason Goes to Hell” to 4K UHD.

If you’re a completist then you most likely have seen Jason Goes to Hell, the ninth movie in the Friday the 13th franchise. It’s arguably not a *good* movie but is absolutely delightful, taking the series of films in a new direction (and lord did they need it) and proving that even when your franchise should be dead in water, there is always a way back from the afterlife … even if a plethora of cops blow your body up to absolute smithereens.

The movie focuses on law enforcement hunting down Jason (Kane Hodder) and trying to finally end his rampage. They successfully do so — or so they think. They blow him up, sending him straight to Hell. He’s no more, he is an ex-Jason, his body is in more pieces than there are fish in a school during shark season. There is nothing left intact about Jason except his heart. That is until the coroner (Richard Gant) decides to eat Jason’s heart and Jason’s spirit (Chucky vibes here anyone?) takes over the coroner’s body as its new host. The movie is just a bloody, gory good time without much rhyme or reason to the chaos that’s unfolding.

This Arrow release is packed to the brim with features, extras, bonus goodies, and two cuts! Before we dive into the quality of the transfer, it’s important to distinguish that the unrated cut (arguably the better cut) has different features than the theatrical cut. There is so much packed within this Arrow edition! Similar to Friday the 13th which Arrow released last year, the reversible sleeve features original and new commissioned art by the amazing Gary Pullin.

In terms of disk quality and all that jazz, both the theatrical cut and unrated cut are presented on BD100 discs, which allows the 4K UHD transfer to shimmer and shine bright without needing to sacrifice quality for special features or anything of the sort. If you have the Scream Factory box set, which contains all of the F13 movies already, this is a worthy upgrade as the picture is cleaner and the colors are significantly more vibrant. The 4K scan with Dolby Vision is truly the best Jason Goes to Hell has ever looked, and most likely ever will. It will deeply satisfy fans who want more color pops; tighter, cleaner pictures; and less gritty feels; despite that being the vibe of the movie themselves.

When Arrow releases a movie, whether it be something absolutely brand spanking new or something that some of the groundwork was already done on, the special features are never something they shy away from. With the archival features from the Scream Factory box set present here, there isn’t much room to think of what more could be added to this release, however there are four brand new features (one commentary included). This is truly an exceptional presentation loaded with extras, physical and digital, making this venture into “The Final Friday” (despite it not being that) a fantastic upgrade that is surely going to have fans of Jason foaming at the mouth as they sit overlooking Crystal Lake.
