Awakenings was the movie that finally paired the late Robin Williams with one of the all-time greats, Robert De Niro, resulting in a film that showcases career-defining work from both actors — performances that often get overlooked due to the sheer size and legacy of their filmographies. Released in 1990, Awakenings now feels like a cinematic time capsule, a prestige drama from an era when studios still invested heavily in adult-oriented storytelling driven by performance rather than spectacle. Directed with a surprising level of confidence and restraint by Penny Marshall (A League of Their Own), the film earned multiple accolades, including a Golden Globe nomination for Robin Williams, Academy Award nominations for both Williams and De Niro, and a Best Picture nomination.
What makes Awakenings so special is how it allows two vastly different acting styles to coexist and elevate one another. Robin Williams, known primarily at the time for his manic energy and comedic brilliance, delivers one of the most restrained and human performances of his career as Dr. Malcolm Sayer. Williams dials everything back here — his voice is softer, his movements are tentative, his expressions are filled with quiet curiosity and compassion. This performance was crucial in reshaping how audiences viewed him. Awakenings proved that Williams wasn’t just a comic genius, he was also a deeply empathetic dramatic actor capable of immense subtlety. Without performances like this, it’s hard to imagine later dramatic turns in films such as Dead Poets Society (1989), Good Will Hunting (1997), and One Hour Photo (2002) being taken as seriously as they were.
Robert De Niro, meanwhile, gives one of the most physically and emotionally demanding performances of his career as Leonard Lowe, a catatonic patient temporarily awakened by experimental medication. De Niro’s work here is astonishing — not because of explosive outbursts, but because of the precision in his physicality. Every movement, every facial expression feels studied and intentional. When Leonard awakens, De Niro captures the wonder of rediscovering the world, the joy of movement, and eventually the devastating frustration of knowing it won’t last. It’s a performance rooted in vulnerability rather than bravado, and it stands tall among De Niro’s greatest work, even if it doesn’t get mentioned as often as Taxi Driver (1976) or Raging Bull (1980).
The chemistry between Williams and De Niro is the emotional backbone of the film. Their relationship evolves naturally, built on trust, curiosity, and unspoken understanding. Penny Marshall’s direction wisely keeps the focus on this bond, allowing scenes to breathe and emotions to unfold without rushing them. The pacing works tremendously in the film’s favor, giving the audience time to sit with these characters and fully absorb the weight of their experiences.
That said, Awakenings does struggle to find a modern audience, largely due to its unapologetic melodrama. Some moments lean heavily into sentimentality, which can feel dated by today’s standards. However, even when the film edges toward emotional excess, the performances ground it. Williams and De Niro never let the story drift into manipulation; they keep it sincere and human.
The supporting cast is also strong, featuring a young Peter Stormare (Constantine) and a terrific John Heard (Big; After Hours) who both add texture without pulling focus from the central performances. Yet this remains, above all else, a two-hander, a showcase for two masters working at the peak of their abilities.
As for the sound quality, it comes roaring to life with a Dolby TrueHD Atmos 7.1 mix that genuinely recreates the power and immersion of a movie theater experience, especially for those with a full Dolby Atmos setup at home. The debut 4K picture transfer demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible, showcasing a level of clarity and depth that elevates the film in a meaningful way. This release truly earns its place on 4K Blu-ray, delivering a premium home viewing experience that will satisfy die-hard fans while also welcoming newcomers.
Overall, Awakenings is an extraordinary drama that reminds us why Robin Williams and Robert De Niro are considered among the greatest to ever do it. It’s also one of Penny Marshall’s finest films, balancing heart, tragedy, and performance-driven storytelling with confidence. Despite being somewhat forgotten over time, Awakenings remains a powerful, deeply moving experience.
