Putting together a masterwork of Spielberg’s biggest hits and career-defining moments, and boiling it down to eight films, feels ripe for interpretation and taste. The Spielberg Collection, in particular, was produced in partnership with Paramount Home Entertainment and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and is marketed as the only way to own all these titles together. That right, there limits what is included. The “definitive Spielberg collection” is essentially impossible to produce because his filmography is scattered across nearly every major studio, which speaks to his massive contributions to film history, and that everyone wanted him to make movies for them.
With all these films previously released on 4K, there are no new transfers — which begs the question, why leave off certain films? That bigger question is what brings this collection together for me. Paramount, alone, has a deeper Spielberg bench than what’s represented here. They own the first four Indiana Jones films, yet only Raiders (1981) makes the cut. They own Minority Report (2002) and Catch Me If You Can (2002), both of which just received brand new 4K transfers approved by Spielberg himself in December 2025, and neither is here. That’s not a knock on the set; however, it gives the feeling that the curation wasn’t exhaustive, it was intentional. These eight films aren’t trying to capture the filmography, they’re trying to capture the man — the blockbuster inventor, the wonderer, the franchise cornerstone, the prestige humanist, the studio journeyman. Taken together, they sketch a complete portrait of who Steven Spielberg is as a filmmaker and what he means to the culture. You won’t find Munich (2005), or The Color Purple (1985), great films and arguable exclusions.
But if someone handed you these eight and asked you to describe the director who made them, you would have a clear picture of Steven Spielberg, the human.
Universal Pictures Owns:
- Jaws (1975) — Universal
- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) — Universal/Amblin
- Jurassic Park (1993) — Universal/Amblin
- Schindler’s List (1993) — Universal/Amblin
- Saving Private Ryan (1998) — Universal/DreamWorks co-production, now under Universal’s umbrella
Paramount Pictures Owns:
- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) — Paramount distributed theatrically and retains home entertainment rights
- War of the Worlds (2005) — a co-production of Paramount and DreamWorks; Paramount holds the home video rights, which is why it released the standalone 4K in 2020.
Sony Pictures Owns:
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) – Columbia Pictures distributed; already available on 4K UHD.
The multi-studio cooperation is an accomplishment in and of itself, and, if you are a physical media collector like me (why else would you get this? These films all have 4K releases on their own.), it’s a very unique piece of film history. This set is also limited to 5,700 copies, each with its own individually numbered certificate.
The physical set itself is an eight-slot steelbook library case, each film housed in its own 4K steelbook. The cases fit snug into the slots, but not too snug, and you can slide them in and out with ease. As with all steelbook, it can be bent and dented — my large eight-slot housing was slightly damaged in transit and it was boxed quite thoroughly. Best to keep this on a shelf.

Good news, bad news: the bonus content is robust and, unfortunately, nothing new. The bonus features have all been a part of previous releases. Again, with the price tag and the unprecedented studio cooperation, one would hope for at least a new essay or two. Every disc in this set comes with bonus content on a separate disc, except Raiders of the Lost Ark. This isn’t unique to this set; it’s an inherited problem from how Paramount originally structured the Indiana Jones 4-Film Collection 4K box set back in 2021. When that set was assembled, all the special features were siloed onto a fifth dedicated bonus disc, meaning the four film discs themselves were always bare. Every standalone Raiders release since has carried that same disc forward — a great transfer, no extras. If you want the supplemental material for Raiders, you will need that Indiana Jones box set.
Bottom line, if you are a Spielberg fan, a cinema fan, and a collector, this set is a must-have. Yes, they all have their own releases and, in some cases, their own collections. The limited nature of the set and the peculiar curation are the selling points. There is enough here to justify owning multiple copies and, if you don’t own these titles, now’s the perfect time to change that.
